What are the benefits of Hyaluronic Acid?

Our body naturally produces Hyaluronic Acid and contributes to the skin's natural health, aiding in wound healing, keeping the skin youthful, providing long lasting hydration, maintaining the supple softness of the skin and structure. Hyaluronic Acid retains moisture in the skin as it can hold up to 1000x its weight in water. When the skin holds moisture the skins cells bind together keeping the firmness and elasticity of the skin strong. Hyaluronic acid acts as a cushion for the tissues which is how we keep our skin lovely and plump.

Why do we need Hyaluronic Acid if our body naturally produces it?

As we age most people are aware that the body’s collagen production reduces, as signs of ageing start to appear (decreasing by roughly 1% each year from around the age of 20 to be precise). The same goes for hyaluronic acid, this also depilates in the body, therefore we lose our elasticity and the skin becomes more fragile, thinner and loses its smoothness over time. Using hyaluronic acid will effectively reverse these effects gradually if used regularly.

How does Hyaluronic Acid fit in with what I already use on my skin at the moment?

Luckily as our body’s naturally produce Hyaluronic Acid, it is a safe ingredient, which you do not feel a need to be weary when pairing up with other products you are applying to the skin. In our basic routine we cleanse, tone, use a serum for a particularly concern and then a moisturiser. Hyaluronic acid can fit in after the toner or before the moisturiser and be paired with any other serum you are using. This will actually benefit the other serum you are using further to lock in those important ingredients and also maintain the skins health while using stronger products. For instance, the use of a cream or serum containing retinol or salicylic acid can cause the skin to become a little dry, so if you applied a few drops of hyaluronic acid onto your skin, you will feel more comfortable and relaxed. You will find Hyaluronic Acid in most creams that you use. This works as a great barrier to lock in previous products used in the skin. Serums work deeper within the skin layers to ensure the skin cells are repairing for those with dehydrated or broken skin.

Should we use Hyaluronic Acid in the morning or evening?

Hyaluronic Acid is best in the day time and night time, so two applications of the product per day will give you optimized results and maintenance in keeping that healthy, awakened appearance. There are several external factors such as pollution, smoke, weather and more, that effects the skin throughout the day, so this will help in keeping the skin moist, dewy and protected. Other external factors could be the harsh effects of air conditioning or heating while at home which can strip the moisture from the skin. We also lose up to 1 litre of water in the body per night when we sleep, therefore you may feel dehydrated when you wake which can have an unpleasant impact on our general health as well and leave us waking up feeling a bit sluggish or with a headache. Internal factors can have just as much of an impact on the skin such as diet, medication and hormones causing an imbalance in the skins PH levels, where the skin may become, red, sensitive or broken from breakouts as well as an over production of natural oils within the skin. If we keep on top of using hyaluronic acid our skin has a good chance of overcoming the harsh effects from the factors mentioned.
